Gideon 9 Month Update

Age: 9 months!

Phew!  I actually cannot believe how much this kid has grown in the last few weeks.  So many of his previously acquired skills have refined.  We already knew this but it's so apparent this month that this kid is SUPER sharp!  Whether it's learning how a toy works, finding something that I hid from him, or turning the page to a book--Gid is wicked smart.

We have had our fair share of challenging days as this little one has a strong will.  He was appropriately named as Gideon means "strong warrior" and that describes this boy perfectly.  While his will power makes me crazy sometimes now, I pray daily that that energy will be channeled into incredible purpose for the Lord someday and in fighting for his faith, his future family, and whatever calling is on his life.

I have touched on this a little in past posts, but Gideon is legitimately one of the funniest humans we know.  He loves to laugh, make others laugh, and has got a really developed sense of humor.  This is so fun and he absolutely gets that from his dad.  So, 9 months has been good to us.  Gideon blossoms more everyday with an unrelenting curiosity to learn and explore, this parenting thing is sanctifying us, and as always out hearts explode with thankfulness for Gideon being entrusted to us.

Weight: He goes to the doctor next week for his 9 month check up so I'll know exact numbers then but I would venture to guess 22-24 lbs

Length: I don't know!!  He is finally popping out of his sleep sack so now he just sleeps with a light blanket on him.  He is getting taller but I'll have to wait and see how tall he is next week.

Sizes (diapers, onesies):  Nothing new here.  The last few weeks I did downsize back to size 3 diapers again he had lengthened out at first without a big weight gain.  But he's in a growth spurt as we speak and now he's back in his size 4's comfortably. All his clothes are 12 months, 2-3T socks, a few 18 month onsies.

Eyes:  Blue still!!  Touching back on the humor I mentioned before, this kids eyes dance and sparkle with some fiery mischief!!  I love it.  Whether you're playing a trick on him, or he's keeping a toy from you, those blue eyes are full of trouble and it's so cute!!

Hair: His hair is still nice and red and of course getting longer every day.  It seems to be getting more curly each day which makes Ryan happy as he has curly hair when it grows out.

Sleeping: In general, sleep is a strength for Gideon but as he's growing it has been tough lately.  Usually he sleeps 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm then dream feeds and sleeps until 4:00 am, nurses at that time and then back to bed until 6:00 or 6:30 am.  But lately it has been more like waking up at 1:00 am, 3:15 am, 4:07 am, 5:55 am BAHHHH!!!! It's tough.

We don't believe in "cry-it-out" but we do have short timed intervals that we try use as we get him back to sleep.  During the day he takes two GREAT naps.  Usually for 1-1.5 hours each and that is an enormous blessing for this mama.

Eating: First of all, whoever prayed that Gideon would eat other places...those prayers have been noticed and so impactful!!  This child has not nursed anywhere but his nursery for over 6 months.  But lately I have gotten him to eat at the pool, in the car, and in the church nursery WOO HOO!

He's been eating a lot of solids and getting so good at putting things right into his mouth.  He's really got a great pincer grasp and aim.  His newest foods are mac and cheese, zucchini, squash, cottage cheese, kiwi, french fries (parenting win!), pinto beans, pumpkin bars, and probably other things I'm forgetting.

Milestones:  He is not officially crawling but he's ridiculously close.  He is really mobile in all directions and can get where he wants to go by pulling, scooting, rolling, etc.  He has been trying to pull up on things lately and will get there soon I'm sure.

He is grasping that when something is hidden, it's not gone.  So if I hide a toy he wants to look for it under the blanket.  He is really good at mimicking and has a small sound vocabulary that is becoming more regular.  He mirrors our facial expressions and even some sounds.

Memorable outings:  I don't think we have gone anywhere particularly new but we have been to the pool a lot, the zoo several times, and a hike to Red Rocks again.  We have plans to camp next month so we are looking forward to that and maybe even an airplane ride to Texas for a vacation at our friend's lake house!

Favorite toys/activities:  He really likes playing "watches" as I call it. Ryan has several athletic watches and a dorky calculator watch that Gideon adores.  He will play with them for a long time.  If he can be propped up against something to stand he will happily do puzzles or sensory boards.  He really likes opening any kind of flap, turning book pages, playing trains at the library, splashing at the pool, group story time,  cousin time, and scooting aroud his room to find toys I sporadically place.

Words/sounds:  He makes some "ma-ma", "ah", "buh-buh", "da" and a few other noises.  He laughs so much of course and fusses very loudly to let us know when something displeases him.

Nicknames:  The newest one is Lou Bug.
Lou, Little Love, Giddy Con Queso (from daddy), Giddy Lou Who (from Aunt Linny), Giddy Puff (from Aunt Linny), Giddy Face (from Maggie), Giddy Pantz (from Maggie)
The usuals...Giddy Bear, Giddy Up, Gid, Giddy, Itty Giddy Titty Monster with the tiny hiney, G (from Uncle Clint), Mister, Man Cub

Funny moments: Gideon has taken to just pitching the toy he is holding really hard over his shoulder or to the side when he's done with it and it's hilarious.  He's like "I'm done now!" and just tosses it without a care in the world about who it will hit or where it will land.  Everyone also got a good laugh from him when he floated down the lazy river earlier this week.  He let me put him on his back while I cradled his hear and he literally just floated around and around the river.  He took the river very literally.

Looking forward to:  Crawling!  Standing!  Steps!  More solid foods!  And honestly just more summertime adventures.  There is os much to do in Denver that's free and kid friendly so I look forward to his ability to go longer without a nap and eat more solids as a way to get us out and about even more.  Every single day is a gift with him and the joy of spending my days with him is more than I could ever ask for.  I look forward to just soaking him up!
