Weight Gain Smoothie

It took Ryan just under 12 weeks to lose 33 lbs.  Yikes!  We did not want or expect that.  I would say most of that was muscle since he was a runner, mountan biker, road biker, and very active guy.  But it's gone and so here's our new mission: Operation Healthy Weight Gain!!!

So in an effort to start helping out with his unintended low weight, I have started whipping us both up a daily high calorie smoothie to try and help my studly husband put some meat back on his bones.  The long term, healthy weight will come back with regular work outs but for now this is our new favorite yummy, weight gain smoothie:

Weight Gain Smoothie

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups almond milk (~200 calories)
1/2 cup plain goat's milk yogurt (130 calories)
3-4 very ripe bananas (~300 calories)
1/4 heaping cup of peanut butter (~200 calories)
3 tbsp coconut oil (~360 calories)
1 heaping serving of rice protein powder (~150 calories)
1 tsbsp raw honey (~70 calories)

Directions:
Combine all ingredients and smooth in a blender until creamy.  I recommend putting in the protein powder first or else it gets very "dusty" when you open the lid.  Refrigerate if you like it colder.

Substitutes:
Try soy, rice, hemp, or regular milk in place of almond
Any type of yogurt will do-I do full fat greek yogurt when it's just me
Consider any other fruit that would blend well-peaches, raspberries...
Cashew or almond butter would be yummy to sub out the peanut butter
Any type of protein powder will do-whey, soy, etc
Finally you can leave out the honey all together or try agave nectar or some other sweetener.

That totals in at 1210 calories but half that if we share.  It's very rare that you'll ever find us counting calories because if we eat right and stay active there isn't a need.  But when your husband is inching towards the underweight category for his height we start to pay closer attention.  We'll keep eating this smoothie once Ryan is healthy again just for the energy it would give us before a bike ride or run and for how dang delicious it it!  I hope you try it or create a unique version that you like.

The goodies to make this business!  All of these are delicious on their own too or mixed in to other recipes.

Happy Blending-and happy healthy weight gain ;)

  1. Wow, that sounds super healthy! Coconut oil is actually supposed to help you burn fat too, so hopefully it will just help build muscle and not fat :)

    1. Oooh that will be good for when he is working out again! Maybe I'll leave out the coconut oil until he's healthier. Thanks Stacey!

  2. Oh friend I'll leave the weight gain to you! I need to lose some over here, in a healthy way! Very interesting recipe, and smart way to help Ryan re-gain the weight. I like how you're going to use it for energy before workouts too. Hope your crazy doctor visit week is going well! Thanks for linking up to Workin It Mondays :)
