Getting Our Garden On!

Ok now I KNOW it's spring!  Building plant beds, yard work, buying seed packets, and just imagining all the discipline to come upon Harpo because I'm sure he'll dig in our glorious GARDEN!!!!!

Have you heard of Square Foot Gardening?  I did all my planning on that linked site but the original idea comes from Mel Bartholomew and you can get his book at any library.

The genius idea behind square foot gardening is using raised garden beds to utilize small but intensively planted space. The emphasis being that these beds allow access to garden without stepping on and impacting the soil as well as maximum crop in minimum space.  Apparently rows don't make sense in gardening!  Mel knows what's up because from my garden plans there is A LOT of vegetables going into just one bed.  I cannot wait to see what grows and to start cooking from my garden!

We're planting three 7 x 4 beds and within those we'll have heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, garlic, kale, lettuce, beets, spinach, carrots, pumpkins, squash, zucchinis, chamomile, basil, oregano, cilantro, chives, lemon balm, lavender, and an assortment of flowers for a pretty factor.

We're starting seeds indoors right now and then will transplant in a few weeks when the plants are strong after the last frost.  Looking forward to having a lot of crops this summer to harvest, saving some money on groceries, and as always having knowledge about what is on our food and what's going into our bodies.

More pictures to come from our gardening adventure.  Looking forward to learning this new skill and sharing the journey with you all!

  1. Wow Mrs. Organized Gardner! You would have laughed at our garden last year. Half the stuff wasn't even in rows. We had carrots popping up in our sunflowers and all kinds of crazy things happening. FYI...we didn't love flowers in our garden like we thought we would....can't wait to see what your garden produces!!!

  2. Oh me too!! Anna I was learning all about spacing and "companion plants". Like tomato plants are best next to garlic or peppers. Lettuce does well next to carrots etc. For sunlight, root expansion or chemical reasons. Gardening is SO dang cool-the Lord was so creative in what He made. And I can't wait to come see the garden you guys have going-you had so much amazing produce last year!

P.S. Maybe I'll just put the flowers with the herbs? What do you think?
