Under Contract

Well we are FINALLY under contract with a Golden house!

We put a new offer on a new house Tuesday morning and now today, Friday, we are approved at our "low-ball" offer as Ryan would put it. So grateful for this step of progress!! Our closing date is September 23 if all goes smoothly...

There is a scheduled inspection Sunday morning; should it go well (pray for it!!) we have plans to spend September ripping up orange shag carpet, painting the walls, ripping off hilarious kitchen wallpaper, replacing 1970's light fixtures, and putting in hard wood floors. Woo hoo!!

Through these last 3.5 months of house shopping and several major disappointments we have learned two things especially:

1) To hold material possessions VERY loosely. Every time we move, and it will be 3 times in 8 months, we have had to sell or donate items. It has taught us both how little we really need and just how much we have been given.
2) We've also learned how much we are really meant to hope in Jesus. We will be let down by the world, by mortgage companies, banks, promises, and people. But Jesus stands firm in our lives-even through something like house shopping. Dang He is good to us. As He INCREASES we only hope to decrease (John 3:30)

That covers it for now! We'll be back with official news the moment Ryan dies of heart attack when our mortgage lender drains our bank account for the down payment :)

This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.

How Stinkin Cool Are Bananas?

Gird up because it's time for another water treatment blog. This one is extra cool. I could rephrase it or I could take it directly (and give credit) from NPR's Health Blog called SHOTS.

So again, I didn't write this article! This article was written by Eliza Barclay and it's called "Slippery Banana Peels Could Be A Savior For Polluted Water."

ENJOY...

Banana peels don't get a lot of respect. Though we here at Shots have never actually heard of anyone slipping on one, it seems they're stuck in the cultural lore as a nuisance, or even a hazard.

But a Brazilian researcher, who also happens to be a banana lover, has taken an interest in the lowly banana peel and is helping to remake its image. The banana peel, it turns out, can take water dirtied by heavy metals from mining operations or other activities and turn it to clean drinking water.

Magic? No, actually, it's chemistry. Gustavo Castro is an environmental chemist at São Paulo State University who says he'd heard for a long time that the peel of the banana was the best part of the fruit, where most of the nutrients and proteins reside. So he decided to investigate its chemical composition to see if these banana peel boosters were right, he told the American Chemical Society in a podcast.

What he found was that banana peels contain nitrogen, sulfur and organic compounds such as carboxylic acids. Castro was especially pleased to find these acids because they can bind with positively charged metals that leach into rivers from industrial operations.

To test the peels, Castro and his colleagues chopped up and dried a bunch of them and mixed them with water from Brazil's Paraná River, which was polluted with copper and lead. The peels performed as well or better than many typical filtering materials, like silica or carbon. What's more, the peels are a cheap waste material. Castro found they could be used up to 11 times before they stopped working as purifiers.

The findings were published earlier this year in the journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

Of course, with any brave new idea there's always a word of caution. The banana peel can't get rid of bacteria in water, so don't strap one around your faucet just yet.

Thanking Him

Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Poor Rilyn.

When Aunt Carly comes to watch this sweet baby for the day, I part her hair right down the middle and then laugh out loud at how much she reminds me of someone ridiculous I know...like my husband when he pretends to be Dwight!

This little lady is ALL Decker and is the definitely the cutest one. I'm sorry Anna and Tyler for making your baby copy Dwight Schrute's hair cut.

So let's forget the Dwight photo and focus on this baby girl's best trait...those scrumptious legs!

Look how nice she is!

I don't just mess with Rilyn's hair and laugh at her tho...we go on walks, play on the floor with toys, yell at Trixie to stop barking, hang out in the toy saucer, practice rolling over, take long naps, and drink lots of bottles. What a great day with my favorite niece!

For this child we prayed, and the Lord has granted the petitions that we made to him...
